What patients should know
Regenerative medicine is a broad field of medicine and biomedical research focused on repairing, replacing or regenerating damaged cells, tissues or biological functions.
The field includes research and clinical applications involving areas such as:
- Stem cells and stem-cell-derived cells
- Tissue engineering
- Cellular therapies
- Biomaterials
- Gene-modified cellular approaches
- Extracellular signaling and exosome research
Importantly, “regenerative medicine” does not mean that every therapy marketed under this term has been proven safe or effective.
Some applications are established medical treatments, some are being evaluated through clinical research, and others remain unproven.
