What patients should know
Stem cells have two important characteristics: they can reproduce themselves, and under appropriate circumstances they can develop into more specialized cell types.
However, the term “stem cell therapy” describes many very different products and procedures.
Patients should ask:
What type of cells are being used?
Where do they come from?
How are they collected, processed and tested?
Are they from the patient or a donor?
What evidence exists for their use for my particular condition?
What is the regulatory status of the proposed treatment?
Stem-cell treatment should never be viewed as a single universal therapy capable of treating unrelated diseases.
