What patients should know
MSCs is commonly used to refer to mesenchymal stromal cells and, in some contexts, mesenchymal stem cells.
They have become an important area of regenerative-medicine research because of their biological properties and interactions with surrounding tissues and immune processes.
However, seeing the term “MSC” does not tell a patient whether a particular treatment has been proven effective.
Important variables can include:
- Tissue source
- Donor characteristics
- Collection methods
- Laboratory processing
- Cell expansion
- Characterization
- Viability
- Dose
- Route of administration
- Storage and transportation
- Treatment indication
Patients should therefore evaluate the specific product and protocol, not simply the phrase “MSC therapy.”
