Healthcare for retirees in Costa Rica
Plan routine care, coverage and support around the life you intend to live.
Ask a coordinatorStart with an annual care plan
List your regular consultations, prescription reviews, monitoring and assistance needs. Ask your clinician which items need attention before relocating. Build the budget from that plan rather than assuming retirement automatically changes healthcare eligibility.
Confirm your coverage route
Ask CCSS about your circumstances and the steps to active coverage. Compare private policy terms and out-of-pocket costs separately. If you retain U.S. coverage, read the Medicare guide and request a written explanation of benefits while abroad.
Choose a location that supports continuity
- Travel to your routine doctor and any specialist appointments.
- A pharmacy and medication refill plan.
- Transport when you cannot drive yourself.
- A person who can help with appointments and communication.
- An emergency plan and contact list.
Review as your needs change
Ask how support can increase if a partner becomes unwell or you need help at home. Distinguish independent retirement living from assistance with daily activities and skilled clinical care. Request a clear explanation of what any residential or home-care service provides.
For ongoing support needs, continue to senior healthcare planning. For residential options, use the existing senior living guide. These are different decisions and should be assessed individually.
