For a short visit, organize access to care and written confirmation of travel coverage. For a move, build a plan for routine appointments, prescription reviews and care in the city where you will live. Planned treatment requires a provider-confirmed scope and follow-up arrangements.
Start with the Mexico country hub for destinations and services. Tijuana, Cancún, Guadalajara, Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua have different travel logistics; confirm the actual appointment location and provider availability for your request.
Public eligibility and private care
Ask IMSS whether an enrollment route applies to your status. Its voluntary Seguro de Salud para la Familia has eligibility conditions, exclusions and waiting periods; do not assume immediate or unrestricted coverage. IMSS official program information.
For private care, confirm the clinician, facility, appointment language and fee. Ask separately whether your insurance covers the service and whether the provider accepts direct payment from the insurer. Keep the written answers with your care plan.
Healthcare costs and insurance
Build a budget from the consultation, tests, professional and facility fees, prescriptions and follow-up. State the currency explicitly when comparing estimates. Providers may require payment up front even when your insurer later reimburses the expense. Official Mexico medical-payment information.
Ask your insurer about your residence or trip duration, existing conditions, prior authorization, exclusions and emergency evacuation. Confirm who handles an out-of-hours authorization and what receipts or reports a claim needs.
Medicare and U.S. coverage
Original Medicare generally does not cover healthcare abroad, with limited exceptions. Ask your own plan about any additional travel benefits before relying on them. Medicare coverage outside the U.S..
Doctors, prescriptions and continuity
- Request the proposed clinician’s full name, registration details and relevant specialty.
- Agree on language support, the appointment address and how results are discussed.
- Ask the clinician or pharmacist about lawful medication access before relying on a refill abroad.
- Prepare a care summary and arrange secure transfer of relevant records.
- For retirees or ongoing conditions, name the clinician who will review results and coordinate follow-up.
