Health insurance in Costa Rica

Compare coverage for a visit, a move or ongoing care before choosing a policy.

Ask a coordinator

Match insurance to your situation

Tell the insurer whether you are visiting, living in Costa Rica, traveling for treatment or spending time in several countries. Request written confirmation that the policy fits that situation. A travel policy, an international health policy and CCSS enrollment are different arrangements.

Compare the policy, not just the premium

Check both the insurer and the provider

Ask the insurer whether the named facility and service are covered. Separately ask the provider how payment works. Keep the authorization reference, written benefit explanation and claim instructions together. A coordinator cannot guarantee that a claim will be approved.

Before a renewal or move, ask whether a change of address, travel pattern or age changes the policy. Do not cancel existing coverage until the responsible insurer explains the implications and replacement coverage is confirmed.

Request help comparing questions

Use the form on the main Americans guide for healthcare navigation. For insurance inquiries, the concierge page includes health and travel insurance request options. Read Medicare in Costa Rica separately if Medicare is part of your current coverage.
